TIPS FOR AVOIDING INDOOR ALLERGENS
You may never fully escape the presence of indoor allergens, but there are steps
you can take to minimize your exposure to them:
Keep the humidity in your house below 50% with a dehumidifier or air conditioner.
Dust mites feed off of dead skin flakes and thrive in humidity
Remove wall-to-wall carpeting, even if it is only covering concrete floors. Instead,
use throw rugs, which can be dry-cleaned or washed in hot water regularly
Keep your mattresses, box springs, and pillows in specifically designed hypoallergenic,
airtight bags. Wash your sheets every week and dry them in a hot dryer. For waterbeds,
wash the mattress pad on top of the bed
Vacuum every week. A HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter or double bag
is better than a standard or water-filled vacuum. And when you do vacuum, be sure
to wear a dust mask
If you’re allergic to animal dander, your only solution may be to remove the pet
from the home. That includes the backyard—keeping pets outside doesn’t do much to
reduce allergen concentrations
Block cockroach entry routes in the home: crevices, cracks, windows, woodwork or
floor gaps, cellar and outside doors, and drains. Remember, roaches need water to
survive, and they thrive in humidity, so fix and seal all leaky faucets and pipes
Keep your environment smoke-free
