TIPS FOR AVOIDING OUTDOOR ALLERGENS
You may never fully escape the presence of outdoor allergens, but there are steps
you can take to minimize your exposure to them:
Before you spend a day outdoors, be sure to check the local pollen count
Stay away from dry, hot, or windy weather. It’s harder for pollen to float in rainy
or cloudy conditions
Avoid going outside during heavy-pollen hours (between 5 and 10 am). Plan outdoor
activities for later in the day or after it rains, when pollen counts are lower
Take your vacation in a low-pollen-count area like the beach or sea
After a day outdoors, make sure you shower and wash your hair, especially before
going to bed
Don’t hang your clothes outdoors to dry—pollen may cling to clothing, towels, and
sheets. Use a dryer instead
Keep the windows closed at night to block pollen and mold from floating in. Turn
the AC on instead
Tend to your plants outside—and don’t overwater them. Mold grows extremely well
in wet soil
Stay away from raked leaves or mowed lawns—raking and mowing stirs up pollen and
mold
